Pitt's Public Impact

About Pitt's Public Impact approach

Public Impact is how Pitt contributes beyond our campuses to the well-being of communities and regions. We invest in people, places, and partnerships — revitalizing neighborhoods, helping local businesses grow, training skilled workers, and providing research that shapes policy.

Pitt plays four vital roles in contributing to the health and vitality of the broader public:

  • Engaged partner in public problem solving
  • Economic anchor
  • Lifelong learning and workforce development
  • Responsive and committed neighbor

We do this through Impact Activities. Impact Activities improve life and lives when a person, household, small business, community organization, or community experiences direct, intentional benefit from a Pitt-led activity designed to create public value.

Every effort is guided by one question: How can Pitt's academic mission make life better for others?

The strategic backbone

Public impact at this scale requires working across boundaries. Led by External Relations, three University-wide units provide the strategic backbone for Public Impact work — setting institutional priorities and activating community partnerships, economic impact, and applied research across all of Pitt — while working alongside an ecosystem of specialized centers and programs delivering impact in their areas of focus. Collectively, we ensure Pitt is the benchmark for public impact, tackling challenges that defy disciplines and sectors.
